Marginalized Groups Find Inclusive Environment Online

IATP centers across Eurasia actively partnered and collaborated with local and internationally-recognized NGOs to provide support and training for various marginalized populations, including IDPs and refugees from the North Caucasus and Afganistan, victims of human trafficking, prospective work migrants, the unemployed, women victims of discrimination and parentless children. With free technology trainings, an online platform for International web forums and discussions and aggressive public awareness campaigns, IATP centers supported vulnerable citizens across the region and enhanced the capacity of local actors responding to the needs of the national marginalized groups that emerged after years of wars, civil conflicts and democratic transitions.

As the countries of the Former Soviet Union still face considerable problems in building civil society, the network of IATP centers throughout Eurasia supported the efforts of local NGOs and community activists to mobilize in pursuit of local priorities, and facilitated cooperation between state officials and citizens. The IATP network sponsored computer and Internet trainings to empower marginalized populations to protect their rights, assisted local NGOs and community activists to find information on best practices, initiated online discussions involving state officials and local residents to facilitate their cooperation in addressing the most urgent problems of the local communities, and provided free Web hosting for online resources dedicated to advocacy campaigns to spread information to a wider Internet audience.

Georgian Citizens Become Empowered to Protect Themselves from Human Trafficking

Over 50 Georgians, mainly women and young people, gained the necessary knowledge to protect themselves from human trafficking - a topical problem, affecting both developing and developed countries - in a series of the IATP-sponsored seminars in March. IATP cooperated with several NGOs, such as the International Organization for Migration, the Georgian Young Lawyers Association and People in Need, which provided their experts to serve as trainers. In March, IATP hosted a total of five events, including a countywide online forum, to educate Georgians about the dangers of human trafficking and illegal migration.

TAG Participants Implement Community Project in Vinnytsia, Ukraine

On March 10, four schoolgirls – participants in the Tech Age Girls project (TAG) - and their teacher visited Gnizdechko (Little Nest), a local orphanage, to deliver toys, books, colored pencils, and other presents gathered within the framework of their community project entitled, "Let Us Help Children Together!" To gather presents for children the TAG participants made presentations in three local schools. As a result of their two-week charity drive, they gathered so many gifts that they decided to donate some of them to the children’s department of the local mental hospital.

IATP Contributes to Fight against HIV/AIDS in Ukraine

In March, IATP centers throughout Ukraine sponsored a series of events dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention and promotion of a tolerant attitude toward people living with AIDS. By informing local residents about AIDS, demonstrating online resources dedicated to fight against AIDS, and supporting local educators and NGOs working with HIV-infected people, IATP helped to restrain the AIDS epidemic in Ukraine and fostered a tolerant attitude toward HIV-affected people in local communities.
